Ghana to be absent from Berlin fruit fair due to lack of funding
Ghana for the first time would be absent at one of the largest fresh fruits and vegetables fair in Europe in 2010 due to lack of funds.
Organisers of Fruit Logistica, Fairpros who have expressed disappointment at Ghana’s inability to participate in the fair say it is unfortunate that Ghana, after establishing a position at the fair in the past years would miss out on an opportunity for the 2010 event.
Some sources have told ghanabusinessnews.com that the reasons for Ghana’s inability to participate in the upcoming fair is complicated, citing political as well as poor management of the export sector in Ghana as reasons.
An exporter who spoke on condition of anonymity to ghanabusinessnews.com said the dissolution of the Board of the Export Development and Investment Fund (EDIF) and its reconstitution sometime this year might have affected arrangements to release funding for registeration and stand construction for Ghanaian exporters of fruits and vegetables to attend the fair.
As a result of these developments, some exporters believe that Ghana would not be able to take advantage of its high global profile to market its fruits and vegetables sector at one of the very large markets that the fair provides.
We have not been able to reach officials of the Federation of Association of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE) for comment as we suspected their phone might be out of order because our several calls were not responded to.
