UN peace keeping needs aircraft

peacekeepeThe UN head of peacekeeping in DR Congo says, the lack of much needed aircraft which UN member states were meant to donate has hampered the ability of the peacekeeping force there to protect civilians.

He said, the peace mission needs about 16 military helicopters. Alain Le Roy told Reuters during a visit to the central Africa nation that they are disappointed but they will keep trying. The Security Council voted last December to send three thousand extra soldiers and additional air assets to the DR Congo, where peacekeepers are backing army efforts to stamp out Rwandan rebels seen as a root cause of a decade of conflict.

After repeated delays, troop reinforcement began arriving last month, but there has been little progress toward security helicopters and a cargo plane.
