Ghana Strengthens Democracy

Vice President John Dramani Mahama, on Wednesday asserted the commitment of Ghana to deepen her democratic credentials by strengthening the constitutional structures.

Mr Mahama stressed that while Ghana continue to gain international recognition and commendations for her democratic practices, Ghanaians are still prepared to heighten the achievements.

The Vice President made the assertion when a delegation from the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) called on him at the Osu Castle Osu as part of the activities marking the institutes’ 20th anniversary.

He said the landscape of the media is vibrant, there are young and vocal politicians and active civil society organisations who check the excesses in governorship. Mr Mahama said as the ruling National Democratic Congress sought to strengthen constitutional bodies to be up to their nation building activities there was also a move for constitutional review to enhance the rule of law.

“The constitution, which has been in operation for more than 10 years has been identified to have some grey areas, which needed to be addressed,” he said. Mr Mahama said Ghana’s democracy was growing from strength to strength and Ghanaians were the better for it.

Mrs Jean Mensa, led the delegation including Dr Todd Moss, Vice President, Corporate Affairs of IEA and Senior Fellow of the Centre of Global Development, who is in the country to give a lecture on the topic “Direct Distribution of Oil Revenues to avoid curse.”
