AMA Demolishes Structures

demolitionIN THE wake of clearing the capital city of unauthorized wooden and metal structures, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has conspicuously began pulling down embarrassing arrangements without prior notification to the affected persons.

Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE yesterday afternoon when it visited the Railways Quarters near the Graphic Communications offices in Accra revealed that on Monday morning, a group comprising of about 10 men from the AMA came to the area with a bulldozer to raze all unauthorized wooden and metal structures along the shoulders of the road linking it to the Central Business District.

Eyewitnesses reported that after the first exercise in the morning, the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Vanderpuije returned with the same squad in the afternoon, expressing displeasure about the shoddy work they had carried out. He was reported as re-ordering his boys to clear every unauthorized structure they came across.

On arrival, the paper observed that several structures, including metal, wooden and glass ones were in fragments and mangled beyond recognition. Victims of the exercise were also seen salvaging any item they could lay their hands on. Yakubu Haruna, who hails from Bawku and deals in car batteries and other computer accessories, said he paid GH¢60 to an AMA official who had promised them they would be safe.

When quizzed about the name of the said official, Haruna said he did not know him; he just gave out the money in order to save his mother’s structure from being destroyed. According to him, it would have been justifiable if the demolished structures were used for business. “These were homes we laid our heads and kept our belongings”, he lamented.

Again, one Kofi Annan who fixes car windscreens at the railways quarters, recounted that when the AMA task force came the inhabitants’ pleas to collect their personal effects from the structures fell on deaf ears. In one of the struggles that ensued, he cut his right palm on a sharp metal, peeling off the top layer. The cry of the many displaced persons now is where to keep their property and lay their heads at night.
