Detainees disappear in China’s riot

human rightsA Human rights group, Human Rights Watch, says dozens of ethnic Uighurs have disappeared since they were detained in the wake of the riots in China’s Xinjiang region. Reports say the forty-three men and teenaged boys were taken in police swoops on Uighur districts of Urumqi and had since vanished without a trace.

According to the reports the riots in the city in early July left almost two hundred people dead. China’s central government has refused to speak about those detained by the authorities in Xinjiang but Human Rights Watch has called on the government to give details of everyone it is holding in detention.
