Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining (WACAM), an environmental and human rights advocacy organization, has asked government to review the country’s Mineral and Mining Act to include laws on Cyanide Spillage and the polluter pay principle.

The call follows the number of Cyanide Spillages in mining communities including the recent one at the Newmont’s Ahafo Mine site in the Brong Ahafo Region.  In an interview with Radio Ghana, the Executive Director of WACAM, Daniel Owusu Koranteng called for an independent water quality assessment inquiry to determine the extent of pollution of water bodies.
