Africa urged to improve its leadership capacity

The Chief Executive Officer of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), Ibrahim Mayaki says there is a need for Africa to improve its leadership capacity.

Mr. Mayaki said the failure of any former African head of state to win the 5 million dollar Mo Ibrahim Award is a wakeup call to leaders across the continent.

Sudanese businessman Mo Ibrahim announced yesterday that his foundation’s committee could not find a winner for good governance in Africa this year.   Former President John Kufuor, Nigeria’s Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and South Africa’s President Thabo Mbeki were thought to be frontrunners for this year’s award. Mayaki said NEPAD is determined to do more to improve the qualities of African leadership.   T

he Mo Ibrahim Award is an award given by a private foundation, with very strict criteria to choose the most suitable leader with positive qualities.  According to Mr. Mayaki the fact that no former African leader was able to win this year’s award is cause for concern.

I thank you for all the efforts you are making to make Africa as a whole understand the problems they are facing with their lack of appropriate leadership…The major problems africa is facing is corruption, nepotism and utter incompetence as well utter laziness at times, as africans we have a long way to go but at every stage we have failed to learn from our past mistakes, the greed and wanting to live like the west is doing us wrong and making it just impossible to understand or comprehend the magnitude of our problems….most african leaders have a problem of not wanting to get out of power no matter what you tell them even when they know that they have out lived there usefulness they still try and tinker with the constitutions so that they can stay in power….
My suggestion to many of you especially people of influence save us from all these headaches and get these leaders to understand that there are many true sons of Africa who have wonderful ideas that can build our mother africa with minimal conflict only if they can step aside….I thank you for the opportunity you have given me to make this comment please…
