Regional Minister In Danger

INTELLIGENCE reports gathered by DAILY GUIDE have revealed that internal power struggle and infighting within the Northern Regional hierarchy of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is heightening, with the reported formation of a rival group to counter the notorious Azorka Boys.

These shocking revelations followed plans by some members of the NDC to constitute a brigade loyal to the Northern Regional Minister, Stephen Sumani Nayina, to counter actions of the notorious Azorka Boys and another group in the camp of Alhaji Ibrahim Adam.

Investigations by DAILY GUIDE indicated that the formation of the new camp resulted from the fallout between the Regional Minister and his party chairman Alhaji Sumani Zakari in recent times.

Mr. Nayina’s supporters, who were earlier fighting behind the scenes for him in the party, had decided to pitch camp with Ibrahim Adam who is also a bitter rival of Alhaji Sumani. Security operatives in the region who spoke to DAILY GUIDE on anonymity, expressed worry that the ensuing rage among the rank and file of the party, leading to the formation of this gang of hoodlums, could threaten the security of the region.

A source said in the event that one group strikes, the other would want to stage a retaliatory attack thereby undermining the peace the Tamale Metropolis had enjoyed in recent times.

Even before the third force could be firmly rooted, issues of verbal and physical attacks seem to be ongoing within the rank and file of the party in the region which many political analysts say, casts a slur on the party’s image.

Reports were gathered that the Northern Regional Minister who was initially seen as a darling boy of the party’s chairman, has suddenly lost favour in the sight of the latter, as the relationship between them in the past weeks has turned sour.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that Mr. Nayina was almost attacked by some members of his party and in another instance prevented them from entering his own office as a number of heavily built thugs believed to be members of another camp barricaded the entrance.

The unfortunate developments in the party, DAILY GUIDE was reliably informed, was carved from actions of the Regional Minister who is alleged to have awarded contracts to his cronies, a move his party members heavily criticized.

The distribution of a number of tractors, it was also gathered, worsen his woes as sections accused him of dolling them out to his favourites who contributed little or nothing towards the party’s victory in the 2008 general elections in the region.

Reports had it that the matter was reported to the police for investigations but the police told the complainants it was purely a political matter and out of their jurisdiction. Attempts by the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, prior to the Chereponi by-election to mend the pieces in the party, ended in a deadlock.

Vice President John Dramani Mahama during his recent visit, summoned the various parties to find ways of resolving the hostile relationship among the top hierarchy of the party but a few weeks after his departure, the situation assumed another dimension.

Mr. Nayina seems to have finally lost grasp of his one time friends in the party, after news broke within party circles that he is allegedly wining and dining with members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who many say now enjoy juicy contracts from his outfit.

There are fears however that if these internal wrangling is not immediately addressed, a bloody regional party congress is in the offing with camps being formed along the lines of contestants to the various positions.

Over the weekend a press conference by the youth chiefs aimed at addressing elements of indiscipline and to raise concerns on the political climate in the metropolis was cancelled at the last minute.

DAILY GUIDE was informed that announcements of the said media briefing heightened tension as a counter group planned to launch an attack on the youth chiefs who allegedly belong to one of the three camps in the NDC. Owners of the venue as a result demanded a police permit before they could grant them permission to use the place, which at the time was under the guard of well armed police officers.

Meanwhile DAILY GUIDE has learnt that Mr. Nayina was last week summoned to the Castle to answer a series of allegations leveled against him by some members of the party and also clear his name on matters that arose from last month’s Chereponi by-election. When contacted, party leaders remained tight-lipped over the matter but it was hinted that measures were being taken to address the matter before the next regional congress.
