A FIFTY-YEAR-OLD mallam, Osumanu Ibrahim, who also doubles as a herbalist, has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling and impregnating a 14-year-old Junior High Pupil (name withheld).

He was sentenced by the Tema Circuit Court “A” presided over by Mrs. Lorinda Owusu. The mallam, who pleaded guilty to the offence, is a resident of Dodowa Zongo while his fourteen-year-old victim lives with her grandparents in the same area.

The prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Matilda Tetteh, presenting the facts in court, said that the accused had been offering money in smaller denominations to the victim for the past two years; a situation, the prosecutor noted, which could best be explained by the accused himself.

She stated that in May 2009 the accused person was reported to have proposed love to the victim, perhaps thinking that the money he had given her would influence her decision. The victim was reported to have stayed quite without giving the accused any response.

The accused, who could not wait forever for an answer, lured the victim into his room where he had sexual intercourse with her, after which he gave the girl GH ¢5. The prosecutor added that since the first act, the Mallam continuously had sexual intercourse with his victim until she became pregnant.

Chief Inspector Tetteh said the grandparents, along with the victim’s uncle, noticed some changes in her. Suspecting she might be pregnant, they asked her if there was anything wrong. The victim, realizing there was no point in hiding the identity of the man responsible for her pregnancy, fingered the mallam, a popular figure in their neighbourhood, as the man who indeed impregnated her.

The victim’s infuriated uncle quickly reported the matter to the Dodowa branch of the Domestic Violent and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) where a medical report form was issued to the victim. The accused person was later arrested after thorough investigations. He was charged and arraigned before the Tema Circuit Court “A” where he was given eight years with hard labour at the Nsawam prisons.
